About Sean McMenamin, LCSW

I believe therapy is a radical tool for self-discovery, personal growth, and improving day to day well-being. Initially the prospect of sharing one’s thoughts and feelings with a complete stranger can seem awkward and bizarre. One of my main goals early on in therapy is to make the experience feel as comfortable as possible by creating a space without judgement and endeavoring to understand you as a whole person, rather than simply a set of symptoms or a diagnosis. I work primarily from a humanistic-existential orientation as I believe that we all have an innate capacity to overcome life’s many obstacles and live closer to our full potential. Throughout this process it is important to examine how you create a meaningful narrative out of your life experiences and come to terms with the human condition. Although therapy is ultimately a very serious undertaking, I try to incorporate some humor whenever possible so it doesn’t feel like you’re sharing your most personal experiences with a robot.

I have experience working with adults struggling with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. My time working in a community mental health center has taught me much about the role of medication and and the importance of being an informed consumer of psychiatric services. Other topics that I have worked with include substance use, PTSD, grief and loss, self-harm, and chronic stress.

In addition to utilizing elements of other forms of therapy including psychodynamic, CBT, and DBT, I also incorporate mindfulness, meditation, and bibliotherapy whenever applicable. I am also open to those facing existential crises or grappling with their spirituality (or lack thereof). In addition to managing symptoms and overcoming mental illness, therapy can be a means to enhance creativity and become more fully alive in the present moment.
