Mary Jo Thorson, LPC believes and works by the philosophy that counseling is a partnership between you and her. She will empower, encourage, and support you in a safe and non-judgmental environment.
Mary Jo offers therapy services for all ages, from toddler to elder adult. She specializes in different topics such as Christian counseling, depression, anxiety, couples/marriage issues, and parenting. She is especially skilled in:
Divorce Support: Divorce can be a difficult event in anyone’s life. Mary Jo makes sure all voices in the family are given the chance to express their feelings in a controlled environment. The parents are not the only ones involved, the children have a huge emotional impact on the change and it can be difficult to navigate without a therapist.
Coping with Grief: Losing a loved one to death or to a divorce, you need to grieve the life before. Mary Jo offers her expertise to help you get through what may be the worst time in your life so you can once again breathe.
Women’s Issues: Parenting, relationships, and what is “expected” of you. There are a lot of issues that can come up that are specific for women. Society puts more pressure on parenting correctly and maintaining a household without complaint, but it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Mary Jo offers sessions to find a happy position in your life to positively impact your future.
Mary Jo uses an eclectic approach to therapy, which includes Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), talk therapy, and holistic therapy. Her main goal in each session is to improve the quality of your life and your relationships with others.
She earned her master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Concordia University Chicago. She has worked in corporate positions for over a decade and understands time management and the support single mothers need. When she is outside of the office, she enjoys being with family and friends, working out and walking her two dogs. Her self-care routines often include reading, kayaking, and meditating.
