About Cary Shepard, LCPC

Starting a journey with a new therapist is often a daunting prospect. Whether it is your first time seeking help or you have walked this path before, there is often a cloud of uncertainty that can hang above as you take those first steps with someone new. As your therapist, my role is clear: I am here to help you in your journey – whatever that may look like for you. Your journey will be unique, and it is my job to be open, to be non-judgmental, and to provide insight based in my experience, training, theoretical knowledge base, and past work. While I have walked with others on their journey, yours is and always will be uniquely yours, and I am honored to walk it with you.

In the interest of helping you decide if I'm the right therapist for you, I'll provide you with a brief introduction to myself. I grew up outside of Tampa, FL and moved to Chicago to attend Loyola University, where I graduated with my Bachelor's of Science in Psychology. From there, I went on to complete my Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, and to obtain my professional counseling license. Coming to the city was one of the best decisions I've made. Where I felt out of place in my hometown, I found community and acceptance in Chicago. I am, therefore, passionate about working with those who feel like they don’t fit in, who feel marginalized, and/or who feel as though their identities are being overlooked, rejected, or oppressed. I am passionate about working with clients who are LGBTQIA+, clients struggling with gender identity and related concerns, and clients who feel the effects of living with intersecting identities in a society that privileges the few. I am also a complete nerd, attending Chicago's C2E2 annually, and have professionally written and spoken about utilizing video games, comic books, and other media in therapy spaces. It is my ultimate goal as a clinician to accept clients where they are at in their own personal journeys, and to work with them to survive, thrive, and discover ways in which they may live as authentic versions of themselves.

As a therapist, I work from an eclectic approach, utilizing tools and theory from a variety of perspectives as it best meets the needs of my clients. I have experience working with people who have experienced trauma, substance and behavioral addictions, depression, anxiety, grief and many other presenting concerns. I always approach therapy from a client-centered stance, meeting my client where they are at in their journey, and remaining ever open to the different turns and paths we may take in pursuit of their goals.
